While in California on vacation, we decided to do an Alcatraz tour. We got on a boat to the island and while I was excited to see the prison etched in my memory, I was sure it was going to be a real cheese-fest. There are certain movies that are sacred to me because of their ties to childhood memories of watching with them with my Dad. Here is a short list of just a few:

  • – 12 Angry Men
  • – Sands of Iwo Jima
  • – Angels with Dirty Faces
  • – Little Caesar
  • – Birdman of Alcatraz
  • – Escape from Alcatraz

Those last two were on my mind as I was on the boat on the way over to the island. I was hoping that it wouldn’t disappoint and be some sanitized, Disney version of what the movies represented to me.

I won’t make this a really long post, I will just say that it was really great and ended up being one of the highlights of my trip. The history of that prison and the island are pretty fascinating and I got really sucked in to it.

Anyway, here are some pictures… I mean that is the whole point of this blog, right? Also, here are some interesting links:
